Jetstar Pacific approved to resume maintenance operations

Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam deputy head Lai Xuan Thanh said the carrier had improved its infrastructure and now met the requirements necessary to carry out requisite “A checks” and maintenance on its aircraft after every 250 flight hours.

However, Jetstar has to report every check to the administration, which will then assign experts to supervise the inspection.

Le Song Lai, board chairman of Jetstar Pacific Airlines, said the decision would help the company save money and time as they had been sending their planes to Singapore for maintenance over the past two months.

It was estimated that each A check at Singapore took at least two days and cost some US$15,000-20,000 per plane, while local maintenance took just half a day at ten percent of the cost, Lai said.

Jetstar delayed five flights and canceled six others on December 25-26, saying three of its six aircrafts were then undergoing maintenance in Singapore.

The carrier had its maintenance license revoked after a November inspection by the administration found flaws in it’s a check system.

The inspection was conducted after two of its ex-chief engineers said the carrier’s aircraft maintenance procedures contained several shortcomings.
